What's the Difference Between TikTok's Short Links and Regular Links?

After using ReelGrab a few times, you may have noticed something: sometimes the link copied from TikTok is short, like https://vt.tiktok.com/xxxxx; other times it's long, like https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/1234567890123456789. What's the difference, and does either one work?

Why there are two different link formats

Short links (starting with vt.tiktok.com or vm.tiktok.com): this is TikTok's own link-shortening service, mostly generated when you share from within the mobile app — handy for sending over text or chat apps without a huge URL
Full links (starting with www.tiktok.com, containing @username/video/ followed by a long number): these show the creator's username and the video's numeric ID directly, and usually come from the desktop/web version of TikTok or certain sharing flows

Both formats point to the exact same video — a short link just redirects once before landing on the full URL behind it.

Does ReelGrab handle both?

Yes. Whichever format you end up with, just paste it into the input box as-is — there's no need to manually convert a short link into a full one first; the system follows the redirect and identifies the video automatically.

When a link actually fails to parse

It's not the short-vs-long format that causes failures — it's usually one of these (covered in more detail in our other article, "TikTok Video Won't Parse or Download?"):

The link was copied incompletely (easy to happen with the longer full URLs)
The video has been deleted, or the account is set to private
The short-link redirect service has a brief hiccup (rare, but not impossible)

A quick tip: use "Copy link," don't type it out

Regardless of which format you end up with, the safest approach is always to use TikTok's own Copy link option from the share menu rather than typing it out manually — manual typing has a much higher error rate, especially with the long numeric IDs in full URLs.
