Is It Legal to Download Someone Else's TikTok Video?

This is one of the questions we get asked most, so let's lay it out clearly. This isn't legal advice — for anything specific to your situation, check the laws where you live or talk to a professional.

Saving a copy just to watch yourself is generally fine

Downloading a publicly posted TikTok video to your own phone or computer, purely to watch it privately without sharing it further, is the kind of personal use that typically doesn't raise copyright issues — similar to taking a screenshot or screen recording of a webpage for your own reference.

Reposting or using it commercially is a different story

The original copyright in the video (the footage, the music, etc.) still belongs to the creator or rights holder — downloading the file doesn't transfer any of that to you. If you're planning to:

Re-upload the video to another platform (even with your own watermark)
Include it in something you're publishing
Use it for advertising or commercial promotion

...here's what's worth doing:

Reach out to the original creator for permission — many creators are open to reasonable reuse or remix requests if you just ask
Credit the source (tag the original account, link back to the video). Crediting doesn't automatically grant you rights, but it shows basic respect and transparency, and is one factor often weighed in "fair use" style analyses
If it's for news reporting, commentary, or education, various regions have "fair use" or "fair dealing" style provisions — but the exact boundaries vary a lot by country, so don't assume they apply without checking

About people's likeness

TikTok videos usually feature real people. Beyond copyright, the people appearing in a video also have rights over their own image and privacy — especially for commercial use. Even if you get permission from the person who posted the video, other people who appear in it (friends, bystanders) may need separate consent.
